Speech Prosody 2002 - an international conference

Speech Prosody 2002 is the first international conference aiming to bring together researchers working in all areas of the field of speech prosody. The subject today covers a huge multidisciplinary area of research involving scientists from very different backgrounds and traditions, including academic linguistics and phonetics, conversation analysis, semantics and pragmatics, sociolinguistics, acoustics, speech synthesis and recognition, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, speech therapy, language teaching. Work in each of these areas has evolved very rapidly over the last few years and it is today extremely difficult for any one person to keep up with the most recent work in all of these fields. This is particularly the case for young researchers coming into the area who need to acquire a background in several fields, which are often taught in entirely different departments or institutions. Speech Prosody conferences aim to be a natural forum for those who wish to get up to date with this exciting and rapidly expanding subject.

Speech Prosody 2002 est le premier congrès international réunissant des chercheurs de toutes disciplines s'intéressant à la prosodie de la parole. L'étude de la prosodie de la parole couvre aujourd'hui un vaste domaine multidisciplinaire qui implique des chercheurs de formations et de traditions très différentes, dont la linguistique et la phonétique, l'analyse conversationnelle, la sémantique et la pragmatique, la sociolinguistique, l'acoustique, la synthèse et la reconnaissance automatique de la parole, la psychologie cognitive, les neurosciences, l'orthophonie et la didactique des langues. Les recherches dans chacune de ces disciplines ont évolué rapidement ces dernières années, de sorte qu'il est aujourd'hui très difficile, pour une seule personne, de se tenir au courant des travaux les plus récents dans tous ces domaines. Ceci est particulièrement vrai pour les jeunes chercheurs qui doivent acquérir une formation dans plusieurs disciplines le plus souvent enseignées dans des départements ou institutions différents. Les congrès Speech Prosody ambitionnent de devenir un forum de communication scientifique pour tous ceux qui souhaitent mettre à jour leurs connaissances dans ce domaine passionnant en croissance exponentielle.

The conference was organised by the Laboratoire Parole et Langage, CNRS, Université de Provence, Aix-en-Provence under the aegis of SProSIG, the Speech Prosody Special Interest Group, with the support of The International Speech Communication Association (ISCA), JST / CREST and Keikichi Hirose Laboratory. It was held in conjunction with the ISCA international workshop Temporal Integration in the Perception of Speech (TIPS).
